4 Days of Thrills: Canyoning and Mountain Biking in Italy

Time for a MinionVan trip. Rick planned for us 2 days of canyoning and 2 days of MTB. After the summer season we were not really fit, honestly. So, we went for 2 days of shuttling with Flow School.

First day was canyoning day – Prialunga (V3A3IV). We spent 4 hours, car to car. Nice flow, awesome views, beautiful rappels.

After finishing the canyon, we returned to Pietra Ligure for a gelato and the beach.

Next day – shuttles! We did Toboga, Kill Bill 1, Madonna della Guardia, Val Nava, La Rete, DH Borgani, Ca Bianca, DH Donne, Briga Destra and Briga Sinistra. In the afternoon I managed to have a small crash, because I was tired. But it was fun.

Barbaira (V2A3II) was the canyon of the next day. I liked this one very much! It took us less than 3.5 hours, car to car.

First we had to walk through an old town to get to the start of the canyon.

And it started with the most beautiful bridge. I love bridges, so I might be biased.

Although there was some walking in the canyon, I did not mind. It had beautiful pools and some narrower sections. I only missed some verticalness of the rappels.

After a nice day out, we returned to Pietra Ligure and enjoyed a nice dinner at Machettö.

The next day we had the backcountry shuttle day, which I liked a lot more. We did Ca du Campo, Euforia, Super Canaletta, Tobogazzo, Rientro, Roller Coaster into Cacciatore.

This is how our 4-day trip to Italy finished and we drove home. Bella Italia, grazie!

  • Gačnik Canyon: A 7-Hour Journey Through Slovenia’s Wild Beauty

Gačnik Canyon: A 7-Hour Journey Through Slovenia’s Wild Beauty

Gačnik is the longest known canyon in Slovenia. By some descriptions it says it takes 8 hours. It took us 7 hours and a half, top to bottom. There are very long walking sections. All 3 of us were done with it at some point. At the end you are very proud of yourself for doing it though. The anchors are in a good state.

There is still a sign that the canyon is forbidden. It is very old and the fine is stated in Slovenian tollars. Gačnik is located almost in the middle of nowhere and it is recommended you are with 2 cars. You save yourself another walk.

I am happy I can say I did this one. It is beautiful, not too technical, but very long walking passages. Thanks to the boys!

  • Exploring 4 Canyons in 3 Days in Italy

Exploring 4 Canyons in 3 Days in Italy

Another canyoning trip to Italy. Italy truly is a paradise for canyoning.

The first day of the trip – Val Tovanella (V4A3V).

Beautiful, quite slippery here & there and the water level was quite high. In some places too high for my liking. So we did some practice and built a zipline or two.

The next day we did Val Fogare inferiore (V4A4IV). It is a very very beautiful canyon, very diverse. Unfortunately, not really permitted. There are some negotiations about it apparently.

Some photos of me made by Rick.

The next day our friend joined us and so did the rain. We had to change our plans. So we did 2 short canyons – Torrente Cunaz and Torrente Chiavola. They were both shorter than 3 hours altogether, from car to car.

Torrente Chiavola (V4A2II) is a cute canyon, with a dinosaur footprint at the end. Normally it is done, when the surrounding canyons have too much water. So it was a perfect choice.

Torrente Cunaz (V3A2III) – it was nothing crazy special, but nice. In some spots there should be anchors added.

    RIck’s photo session.

Thanks to the boys and Italy, of course!

  • April Escapades at Rio Macile

    April Escapades at Rio Macile

Rio Macile or also known as Brussile (V4A4IV). Very popular canyon, with “proper” anchors and even SOS signs at each anchor. We did it in 3 hours, from car to car.

It is beautiful, but quite cold. The last rappel is 60 m and it is quite magnificent. Unfortunately, I do not have a great photo of it. I only have pictures from the top and straight up from the bottom (the bottom 3 photos).

    Fun times!

  • Rio Pissanda: an Italian rappel canyon

Rio Pissanda: an Italian rappel canyon

Rio Pissanda (V4A2III) is 4.5 hour canyon (car to car) in Italy. It is a nice, continuing canyon. Meaning, not much walking in between, but rappel after rappel. The highest rappels are 25 m, 35 m and 40 m. It is quite slippery and the water is not the cleanest.

Rappelling was fun and not too technical. I enjoyed that it was not much walking.

  • Adventure-Filled Birthday: MTB, Diving and Canyoning

Adventure-Filled Birthday: MTB, Diving and Canyoning

Celebrating my birthday this year was very fun. On Sunday we went on pre-birthday MTB ride at Monte Jouf.

We did a 2 hour ride (moving time).

    Uphill on the road.

This was the most fun trail – Puerto escondido, which I got to do twice, thanks to shuttle bunny Rick.

We have also done Barbarossa, Kraken and DH Jouf II parte, with which we have started our ride. Fun trails, Barbarossa was my least favorite though.

The next day, my birthday, we went diving to Y40. Because my wish was to dive on my birthday, not ski as earlier years. I use my iPhone underwater with the housing Divevolk.

Underwater photos are very blue-toned, so to have more “realistic” colors, I use Dive+ app, which restores colors. Look at some before and after photos. Photos made of me were made by Rick and I edited them.

The utmost depth of Y40 is 40 m. Well, if you lie on the floor, it’s actually 41 m. Very cool place to practice your diving skills.

Next day we went canyoning to Torrente Favarinis. A short 40 min walk to the entrance and more than 2 hours canyoning tour. It took us more than described, because I was downclimbing and walking slower than otherwise. I broke my record. I did a 50 m rappel by myself. It was the last out of 7 waterfalls of the canyon.

When you finish you are practically by the car, which is my favorite ending a canyoning tour.

What fun ways to celebrate my birthday!

  • Demanding Paradise: Val Vielia III & IV

Demanding Paradise: Val Vielia III & IV

This canyon is divided in 4 parts. We have done the third and the fourth. The fourth is apparently the most technically demanding of all the parts. Altogether it took us almost 8 hours.

    Lovely rock formations.
    Beautiful pools.
    Some cold swimming.
Seeing the bridge, knowing we are at the end.
    Well deserved Italian pizza.

    Quite an adventure! Thanks, Rick.

  • A Day Trip: Discovering the Beauty of Rio Lavarie and Rio Patoc

A Day Trip: Discovering the Beauty of Rio Lavarie and Rio Patoc

Both canyons in one day. Rio Lavarie was the first one of the day. Altogether it took us around 2 hours and a half. It is beautiful, versatile lime stone canyon.

    Rick walking through Rio Lavarie.

Rio Patoc is a short, but beautiful canyon. The whole tour took us around 2 hours and a half. We swam in the river on the way back to the car. Honestly, I did not enjoy it very much. It was shallow, so you were bumping on the rocks and the flow was pretty fast.

    Start of Rio Patoc.

Thank you for another beautiful day in the canyon!

Rio Cuestis: Thrilling Rappels and Scenic Views

My second canyon of 2024. This adventure took us a total of 5 and a half hours. Walking up to the start of the canyon took around 1 hour. The fun in the canyon itself was around 4 hours.

Beautiful canyon, very grippy stone. After first two rappels there is a longer walk, but what comes next is all worth it. Photo by Rick.

I loved the rappels, beautiful stone and amazing scenery. Photo by Rick.

It is not an aquatic canyon really, so I felt quite confident and I enjoyed all the rappelling. I am not a big fan of very aquatic canyons. At least not yet. 🙂
One of the last few pitches, which was the most impressive, a 57 m free hang.

Another fun canyoning adventure. Thanks, Rick.

  • Vertical Love at Rio Pliz

    Vertical Love at Rio Pliz

My first canyon in 2024. Vertical 5, aquatic 2, combination I quite enjoy. I love vertical canyons.

    Starting pool, clear water.
    Rappels and not much walking.
The highest waterfall of the canyon.
The last 2 waterfalls of the canyon. Before we rappelled down to the bottom, we saw an Alpine ibex drinking water down by the pool. Such a peaceful sight.

Very vertical, just a nice amount of walking, beautiful views. Thank you, Rick.
