Exploring the Enchantment of Oman’s Arab World

This was a travel to another world, to the magical Arab world. Omani people are the most kind, attentive and friendly people I had ever meet. Not only in Arab countries, but worldwide. The lengths they go to make you feel welcome and special is incredible. It is in the little moments of great meaning.

This was another trip with my mom. We organized ourselves, but joined various tours there. We stayed 8 days in Muscat. We stayed in a nice hotel next to Mohammed Al Ameen Mosque, which is beautifully lit at night. I took photos of it from almost every angle at different times.

On our first afternoon we decided to go on a sunset dhow cruise. Honestly, it felt expensive for just a boat cruise and some snacks. Anyway it was worth doing to enjoy the sunset and the views.

Our first night we went for dinner to our neighbors, Al Luban Land Restaurant. The first night we tried some camel meat. We went there once more to have some seafood. It was nice and cheap.

There was another nice neighbor restaurant, Samakmak. There you had fresh fish on display and we chose what we wanted to eat. It was delicious. We went there twice more. The first visit was less than 20 €, the second two were less than 10 €. In both restaurants were many locals eating. That is normally a sign for good food in my eyes.

Our first morning was diving (snorkeling for mom) at Daymaniyat Islands. The 2 dives were lovely. I saw a huge stingray and a peppered eel. There were 2 honeycomb eels, many fish, and 2 turtles as well. Unfortunately no leopard shark, but I still enjoyed very much. The dive masters from MolaMola Diving Center were very nice and friendly. They also took very well care of my mom when snorkeling.

We used Otaxi app to get around Muscat. It is like Uber, convenient and affordable. We used it the next day as well to get to Qurum beach, where we had a nice walk around.

At the end of our walk we visited Ramssa restaurant for lunch. We ordered a set menu, so we tried some of everything traditional and local.

After our lunch we took another taxi to visit Ghubrah Beach and Mall of Oman. It is the biggest mall in Muscat. They even have a hall with artificial snow.

We had some nice views from our hotel, in the night, for sunrise or for sunset.

The next day we had a private tour of Muscat. We visited the Sultan Qaboos Mosque, the fish market, old town of Muscat, Mutrah Souq and Al Alam Palace. At the end we went for lunch at Bait Al Luban restaurant. There we tried shuwa. It is marinated meat, traditionally made in a fire pit for over 6 hours. The tour was really nice and informative. Our guide Basheer was very knowledgeable and friendly.

Our next day we went on a trip to Nizwa and Jebel Shams. It is a 2 hour drive one way from Muscat. Although we had a peculiar guide that day, the trip itself was nice. The Grand Canyon of Oman was really impressive. I just couldn’t believe I am standing on 2000 m without any snow around me.

    Nizwa Souq:

At Nizwa Fort our guide made sure we also tried some Omani bread, which was very tasty snack.

The views of the Grand Canyon from Al Haym and Al Khitaym.

The next day was the nicest of trips, besides diving of course. We went to Wadi Shab and also Bimmah Sinkhole at the end. Our guide was super nice and we had some nice lunch. Wadi Shab consists of walking and swimming. Before starting there is a very short boat ride to the entrance of Wadi. The swimming part has 3 pools. At the end of the third pool, there is a very narrow passage. This leads to a smaller waterfall and a cave. My mom was a bit nervous of this last part, so to make it easier we rented life jackets. Wadi Shab is quite popular, also with non-swimmers. Having a life jacket saved us some stress. It was also easier for me to take photos. I had to hold my phone in my hands all the time, because my phone case didn’t have a string. We paid 2 rials for the jackets and left. Looks like they don’t have trust issues.

Some views of Tiwi Beach before reaching the parking for Wadi Shab.

    The boat and walking part:

The last pool with the cave:

When we returned to the van, we had some delicious lunch. After that we went to our last stop – Bimmah Sinkhole. There we had a fish pedicure. Some fish were already quite big, so it hurt a little.

Another 1.5 hours and we were back at the hotel. The next day we had another easy day, meaning no organized trips. We went to take a look at Mall of Muscat. There they don’t have artificial snow, but they have an aquarium. We went for lunch to McDonald’s, because we wanted to try it there. We had some peri-peri chicken wrap and burger. It said halal on it. We also ordered karak chai.

On our last day we enjoyed a 4×4 jeep ride in Wahiba Sands. Before that we stopped at Al Mudayrib. It is a place where they are trying to keep the old settlement and atmosphere. Later, in the dessert we also enjoyed our last Omani coffee with dates. We loved it, we ate and drink so much of it every day. We said hi to some dromedary camels. It was fun. After that we went to Wadi Bani Khalid, which is much less prettier than Wadi Shab. The water is quite warm and dirty from people soaking in it. We decided not to have a swim there. We walked around a bit though. On our way back to Muscat (2.5 hours) we stopped for karak chai on a gas station. By the way, the fuel there is 0.40 € per liter.

Our amazing 8 days of Arab world went by really fast. We are full of impressions and memories.

  • 5 Beautiful Short Walks in “Gorenjska”

5 Beautiful Short Walks in “Gorenjska”

Leaving Bovec and heading over the mountains to Gorenjska region of Slovenia (Upper Carniola). Here I will lay out some nice, easy walks in that region that I have done in the last years. They can be done in winter, summer or any time of the year. They are beautiful in their own way in each season. And they are also all quite popular in Slovenia, expect crowds on a sunny weekend.

    1. Tamar and Planica Valley

To start the walk to Tamar, you need to park your car at the sports centre Planica. You can follow the old road or the path, which goes just along the road. Either way it takes less than an hour one way, easy walk. We did around 11 km there and back, less than 200 m height difference.

When you are there, it is nice to check out the waterfalls Črne vode and Nadiža. They are especially beautiful in spring or after rain.

      2. Koča na Ljubelju

This hut is located at an old border check, the oldest mountain pass in Europe. The hut is normally open for the weekends. When there is enough snow, it is a popular spot for sledging. Otherwise it is a lovely, hour walk or so one way. Also a nice spot for a full moon walk. There is around 300 m height difference and 4.5 km up and down.

        3. Mojčin dom na Vitrancu

This walk can be done from a few starting points. We started from Jasna and it took us around 2 hours up. We went down around the ski slope (it was closed then) to Kranjska Gora. It took us an hour and 15 minutes to get back to the parking lot. The walk was approximately 11 km and around 700 m height difference. The views are superb from the hut.

On the way up – winter fairytale at the end of November.

At the hut and the views.

        On the way down.

        4. Koča v Krnici

Another beautiful choice for a winter, snowy walk. The walk takes about 2 hours round trip. It covers around 10 km with less than 300 m height difference, starting from Pišnica. There is also a hut, but open only for the weekends and holidays.

If you go later in the afternoon, maybe you will be lucky to not meet anyone else.

        5. Peričnik Waterfall

This one I have already mentioned once, but now I am showing you the winter version of it. In winter you leave your car before the ramp and take a one hour walk to the waterfall. There and back, again around 2 hours, 8 km, less than 200 m height difference. The conditions only allowed to go to the lower waterfall.

On the way to the waterfall.

        The frozen Peričnik waterfall.

The photos of the same waterfall from springtime, approached from the other side.

This isn’t a list of must-see places. It’s just a small reminder to myself of walks that work – on slow days, busy days and everything in between. But maybe it sparks an idea for your next walk in Gorenjska.

      1. First Time Hiking in France: A Short Van Trip Adventure

First Time Hiking in France: A Short Van Trip Adventure

We went with our MinionVan for a short but sweet trip to the border of France. It was actually a boys’ trip, but I decided to come along as well. And I’m glad I did!

Our first lunch stop in France already had beautiful views of larches changing the color of their needles.

But before we went to France, we had another stop in Pontida, Italy. We went for a short bike ride, where we stumbled upon a funny barbecue in front of the church.

Anyway, the biking was a bit too cross country for me, but fun enough. The trails we did are called Uccellaia 2 and Guendalina Basso.

Let’s return to France. It was still raining the first day. We checked out some waterfalls in the area of La Grave. We also visited my favorite French shop, E.Leclerc in Briançon.

The second day the boys did some canyoning, I hiked up to Lac Lauvitel. Lac means lake in French. Beautiful, easy hike – 10 km, 2 hours up, less than 1.5 hours down, 750 m height difference. This was my first proper hiking in France.

On the way to the lake:

        The views of the lake:

The next day we were exploring a different part of Le Parc national des Écrins. I went for a nice walk to Cascade de la Pisse, along the Le Veneon river. I did this while waiting for the boys to return.

The next day, Rick and I went to Les Deux Alpes, Venosc. Since it was a school holiday in France, we were lucky that the trails and chairlifts were open. Also the ticket was super cheap. There was snow on the top and wet further down. Still worth it!

        The views were magical!

I was in love with this part of the trail! Photo by Rick.

For the last day I had my morning coffee with the nicest views.

After that I went for a stroll around La Grave. It was out of season, the town was very quite. All the locals were looking at me funny. The town is quaint though.

This was it for our short, but magical French adventure!

      2. Exploring Cappadocia: Sunrise, Sunset and Stunning Views

Exploring Cappadocia: Sunrise, Sunset and Stunning Views

My mother’s wish was to see Cappadocia. After 5 years or so her wish has finally come true. This was our trip. I was very happy to see it too. The formations there are out of this world. We stayed in a hotel in the center of Göreme. Our first sunrise there was magical.

That morning I did so many photos, but still not one photo could describe the real beauty of it.

Here is another video from when the balloons were still warming up.

This video was made a bit later, when most of the balloons were in the air. There were probably more than 150 balloons up there.

It was magical. We were also lucky, because the next 2 mornings the balloons were not going due to the strong wind.

The rest of the day we took it easy around Göreme.

Because later I had my sunset MTB tour around Rose Valley. Although the trails were not the greatest, the landscape and the views made up for it. Well, the Red Bull part of it was fun. Another magical moment! We started around four or five and it was still very hot to pedal.

Of course I had a rental bike, I did not want to pack up my bike for only 1 ride. It was alright, but I sure missed my Switchy. The tour was nice, I’ve seen a lot and the guide stopped in some interesting historical spots as well.

After a long day, I really wanted to try Turkish Ravioli. Where better to try them than at Turkish Ravioli Restaurant? Besides ravioli we ordered peravu and bulghurball. When ordering ravioli, be mindful that they do not serve it hot, but medium temperature. Bulghurball is made of bulghur wheat and filled with meat and walnut, great as hot appetizer.

The next day we went on the “Green Tour”. It stops at Kaymakli Underground City, Selime Monastery, Ihlara Valley and Pigeon Valley. Unfortunately it does not avoid the crowds, but if you have only a few days there, it is practical.

The next day we went on the “Red Tour.” We visited Zelve Open Air Museum, Pasabag (Monks Valley) and Uchisar Castle. These were the better stops. We also saw Devrent Valley (Imagination Valley), Avanos (pottery) and Love Valley.

Besides the amazing landscape, we also enjoyed some nice Turkish food these days. Besides the kebab & Turkish ravioli the first night, I had them again at a different restaurant.

Lovely experience I got to share with my mom.

      3. Adventure-Filled Birthday: MTB, Diving and Canyoning

Adventure-Filled Birthday: MTB, Diving and Canyoning

Celebrating my birthday this year was very fun. On Sunday we went on pre-birthday MTB ride at Monte Jouf.

We did a 2 hour ride (moving time).

        Uphill on the road.

This was the most fun trail – Puerto escondido, which I got to do twice, thanks to shuttle bunny Rick.

We have also done Barbarossa, Kraken and DH Jouf II parte, with which we have started our ride. Fun trails, Barbarossa was my least favorite though.

The next day, my birthday, we went diving to Y40. Because my wish was to dive on my birthday, not ski as earlier years. I use my iPhone underwater with the housing Divevolk.

Underwater photos are very blue-toned, so to have more “realistic” colors, I use Dive+ app, which restores colors. Look at some before and after photos. Photos made of me were made by Rick and I edited them.

The utmost depth of Y40 is 40 m. Well, if you lie on the floor, it’s actually 41 m. Very cool place to practice your diving skills.

Next day we went canyoning to Torrente Favarinis. A short 40 min walk to the entrance and more than 2 hours canyoning tour. It took us more than described, because I was downclimbing and walking slower than otherwise. I broke my record. I did a 50 m rappel by myself. It was the last out of 7 waterfalls of the canyon.

When you finish you are practically by the car, which is my favorite ending a canyoning tour.

What fun ways to celebrate my birthday!

      4. Exploring Puglia: Highlights of Our Short Italian Getaway

Exploring Puglia: Highlights of Our Short Italian Getaway

Another short girls’ trip with my mom. I’ve been seeing all these photos of trullis on Instagram, people visiting and I fell in love with it. My mom also had it on her bucket list for a while. At first the plan was to go with the car from home and do a road trip. But then due to good connecting flights, we made it a short trip. We spent a couple of days in September when I didn’t have to work.

The trip started rather funny. I booked a rent-a-car at Felirent. Without a rental it is impossible to get around Puglia. It was one of the rare agencies, where you didn’t need a credit card. No, I don’t have one. And I think rental agencies should really change their game. Anyway, the place was filled with Fiat Pandas and really sketchy looking. It took us probably more than one hour to get a car. Of course, they charged us something extra, just because they can. Luckily, everything was good, also upon returning the car.

Anyway, let’s start the trip. We arrived early, so our first stop of the day was Polignano a Mare. We have prebooked a boat tour of the caves. We were more interested in seeing the place from the sea than from land. They took us to see many different caves – grotta.

After the boat ride we continued our journey. We had a short stop in a quaint town – Locorotondo. We had a snack stop at Il Re dei Panini – the King of Sandwiches. It was so big, the two of us only ate half.

In late afternoon we finally arrived to our home away from home – B&B Salita Delle Pere. The cutest place with the nicest lady host and delicious breakfast. You actually stay in a trulli, if you book so. For an affordable price and with a great location.

Breakfast at B&B Salita Delle Pere with many different home-baked pastries.

The next day was the most exciting one – we visited Alberobello. We were just wandering the whole day around, getting lost among all the trullis. My one thing to do beside visiting Alberobello, was to try orecchiette in Coppino. I would go back just to eat that again!

I really enjoyed Alberobello. But since we still had some time in the day, we decided to check out Ostuni.

Finishing off the day with a proper Italian dinner.

Our last day we saved for Matera. It is around one hour drive from Alberobello, but a must to visit. Matera is a UNESCO World Heritage site with its rich history and interesting architecture. In modern times, it was used as a filming location. It served as a backdrop for films such as The Passion of the Christ, Wonder Woman, and many others. We joined one of the walking tours to find out more about its history. On our own it would be very difficult to actually find the Sassi cave dwellings.

After many steps we treated ourselves to a panini at L’Antica Credenza – La Paninoteca.

After refueling we decided to visit Palombaro lungo – the largest public cistern in the city. It was brought to life during the construction of Piazza Vittorio Veneto in 1991. Being roughly fourteen meters deep and fifty meters long, it had a capacity of over five million liters of water.

We finished our visit to Matera with a view point spot.

Found some more orecchiettes and called it a day. The next day we returned the car, they took us to the airport and said ciao, bella!

      5. My First Diving Experience in Picturesque Raja Ampat

My First Diving Experience in Picturesque Raja Ampat

I have wanted to try diving for a very long time now. Then Rick finally said ok, let’s do this. So we went straight to Raja Ampat, Indonesia, one of the top diving locations. Many people said we will be spoilt from now on.

We stayed in a homestay for about 10 days. No wifi, no alcohol, no choice of food. We ate fish, rice and veggies every day for 3 times a day – my tummy loved it! Once in a while we had something different, like dadar gulung – pancakes made of coconut & pandan. We had this whole beach, like from a screensaver, just for ourselves. It was picture perfect.

The island was very small, we would walk all around it in about 45 minutes. There was a school and the local men were fishing every day.

On our arrival, we had some problems finding our homestay. The boat left us at the main jetty. We found out later that ours was broken. The locals don’t really speak English. After some time using gestures and attempting to pronounce the name of our homestay, we made it.

We started our OWD at the resort of the dive center. After we passed it, we of course joined their other dives. They picked us up every day at the jetty. Every dive was special, since we were experiencing something new really. At the time, I was not taking photos yet underwater. However, our guides were so kind to take them for us. They sent us all the photos from all the dives we did.

Between the 2 dives we always had a surface interval on one of the islands. On one of them we got a chance to see fruit bats.

On another one we went to see the view of Piaynemo. It was beautiful to see it.

We had some friends trailing us around the island all the way to our homestay.

Our hosts were very kind. One day we had a privilege to get fresh coconut, straight from the palm. Our host climbed up so easily, cut it off and made it ready for us to eat. He even made a little spoon out of the peel. Amazing. Another day he came home on his narrow boat with the biggest swordfish ever. He was very proud of his catch. I forgot to put the case off of my phone, so I’m not really proud of these photos. Still, you get the picture.

        Local fishing at sunset

We fell in love with diving! There will be more!

      6. Experiencing Ferragosto at the Slovenia-Italy Border

Experiencing Ferragosto at the Slovenia-Italy Border

Another adventure in peak summer – 14 and 15 August. It is a famous Italian holiday on the 15th of August – Ferragosto. Since it was Monday and Tuesday, we were off. And my friend was also off, because it is a holiday in Slovenia as well. We decided to hike up Mangart and to visit one canyon in Italy – Rio Malimberg.

In summer, there is a hop on hop off bus. It takes you from Bovec to Mangart Saddle. More precisely, it goes to the last parking lot just underneath it. So, from there to the top of Mangart took us around 2.5 hours on the “Slovenian” way. Down we went on the “Italian” way in around 2 hours. Both ways are pretty demanding, you have to be careful and have proper gear, also in summer. It is smart to go early, to beat the crowds and hot summer sun. When we were going down, there were crowds going up. Many of them not properly equipped.

        Going up the “Slovenian” way.

Getting to the top and the views from Mangart.

The views are superb already from the Mangart Saddle. It is Slovenia’s highest lying road. In summer is crazy busy with cars, motorbikes and bicycles. In winter is fun for sledging or tour skiing. We were just in time for sunrise and it was magnificent.

The views on the way down and delicious lunch at the hut. I had “ričet”, which is traditional Slovenian barley and bean stew. In 2025 the hut was not operating anymore, unfortunately. From 2026 probably new caretakers will take over.

The next day we did a canyon, called Rio Malimberg. It is a short canyon. It took us 2.5 hours car to car. It is beautiful, with clear water and nice rappels.

It is a fun canyon, also appropriate for beginners. And my favorite, it doesn’t have any long walking passages. Great two adventurous days with my people.
